Some show cancellations hit harder than others, and that's just a fact. They leave this void when they're canceled. I'm talking about the kind of void that makes you rewatch old episodes, quote the characters daily, and pretend the cancellation never happened. Scream Queens was one of those shows for me. It definitely didn’t deserve to wrap up after just two seasons.
It is simply a horror-comedy gem that was paid dust and ended way too soon. I mean, it had the wit, the style, and the cult following to thrive for years, yet it was cut short before reaching its full potential. It's just not fair, and I'm still not over it. Truthfully, I'll most likely never be over it. While other shows drag on for seasons past their prime, Scream Queens was taken from us before it even had the chance to hit its stride.
For example, you have American Horror Story continuing to churn out season after season, even when its quality has been hit or miss. If I'm being honest, the horror anthology has had difficulty keeping the same level of creativity, excitement, and fresh ideas as it did in its earlier seasons. Over time, the show has become increasingly predictable, with some seasons feeling like they’re rehashing old ideas or relying on shock value to keep viewers engaged rather than offering original and compelling storytelling.
In my opinion, Scream Queens had everything it needed to outshine American Horror Story. It effortlessly blended dark humor, satire, and horror in a way that felt fresh and exciting. The show knew its identity perfectly: a campy, exaggerated horror-comedy that never took itself too seriously yet still managed to deliver real scares.
AHS, on the other hand, has had its moments, but it’s struggled to maintain that same energy and originality over the years. I never imagined this would be a problem for Scream Queens. It had the perfect combination of bold, unforgettable characters, sharp humor, and a fresh take on horror that made it stand out from everything else on TV.
With a cast of larger-than-life personalities and a plot that was as ridiculous as it was exciting, this beloved horror-comedy had all the ingredients for success. It was one of those rare shows that made you feel like you were in on the joke, and its cancellation still feels like a major missed opportunity. What does a girl got to do for you to bring Scream Queens back, Ryan Murphy?
Scream Queens was co-created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, the same trio behind the hit musical comedy-drama series Glee. The show ran on Fox for two seasons from 2015 to 2016 before being canceled in May 2017. According to Falchuk, the decision to cancel the horror-comedy was driven by low viewership and difficulty in attracting a consistent audience. Of course, its cancellation was a bitter pill for fans who felt the show had so much more to offer, but they ultimately had to come to terms with its untimely end.
In May 2020, Murphy revealed that he was working on a third season of the horror-comedy, but unfortunately, the project has yet to come to fruition. It seems that the show’s potential return has either been canceled or stalled. Fingers crossed, though, that one day the show will rise from the ashes and give fans the closure or continuation they've been waiting for.
The first season was set in a sorority house at the fictional Wallace University, where a series of gruesome murders begins to unravel the lives of the sorority sisters and the students on campus. The killings are carried out by a mysterious serial killer, and it's up to the sorority's president and a few unlikely allies to uncover the identity of the murderer.
Season 2 saw a change in location to a hospital where some of the characters from the first season, including Chanel Oberlin and her friends, return. They find themselves the targets of a new serial killer known as the "Green Meanie."
The cast significantly changed from season 1 to season 2. However, some of the talented actors who were in the show were Emma Roberts, Skyler Samuels, Lea Michele, Glen Powell, Diego Boneta, Abigail Breslin, Keke Palmer, Oliver Hudson, Nasim Pedrad, Lucien Laviscount, Billie Lourd, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Both seasons of Scream Queens are streaming now on Hulu.
