Season “666” of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula has ended, and a new Drag Super Monster is on the books. Now that we have had time to digest all of the events that took place during the season’s run, let’s take a look back at the high and low points of Dragula's sixth season.
First, let’s talk about the winner of the Dragula crown. So, if you haven’t watched season six yet, be aware that there will be spoilers in this article. Our final three came as no real surprise to anyone who paid attention: we were left with Asia Consent, Auntie Heroine and Grey Matter…all of whom deserved to be there at the end.
Though all three gave it their all in the final floor show and competition (which involved a Dead By Daylight challenge), in the end the crown went to Asia Consent, who seemed to dominate the entire season. She was funny, not as shady as some of the other competitors, and her level of talent was definitely towards the top. And it certainly helped that she is a huge Dead by Daylight fan.
In my humble opinion, Grey Matter was neck-in-neck with Asia as far as talent is concerned. Their makeup and special effects skills were unmatched, and they always seemed to think out of the box. Auntie Heroine had skills, but seemed unnecessarily harsh and judgey with the other contestants at times.
The biggest surprise towards the end was probably Yuri’s staying power. Although she managed to stay safe in nearly all of the challenges, she only won one of them – but still she hung on until the final four. Some of her looks and performances were meh, but she was very funny and likeable, which may have helped.
Another surprise was the return of Majesty, who definitely brought the drama from the very beginning. She pulled Aurora to the side to “warn” her that there was talk amongst the contestants that she may have told people she would be a contestant this season, which is forbidden. Maybe it was true, but it came across as unnecessary drama.
Then, just a few episodes later, Majesty quit the competition willingly. She wasn’t even up for extermination, which ultimately saved Vivvi the Force or Grey Matter, who had to endure shocks from a tesla coil.
Speaking of termination challenges, they were a doozy this season! Shark diving, sky diving, electric shocks, enduring a freezer…the contestants had to go through a lot to prove themselves. There were even callbacks to prior challenges, but the ante was upped even on those. For example, the vacuum-sealed latex challenge was back, but this time, Aurora and Jaharia had to also contend with electrical shocks at the same time.
Perhaps the funniest was the tattoo challenge that Jaharia and Asia had to participate in. They were given three riddles, and for each incorrect answer given, a really horrible tattoo grew bigger. Both were good sports about it, but boy was that tattoo horrendous!
The judges this season were great. We got Don Mancini and Jennifer Tilly (a true class act), Alaska Thunder***k, Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the Mail Girl, David Dastmalchian, Mike Flanagan and former Dragula contestants Landon Cider and Niohuru X, plus a couple of appearances by Cynthia Doll.
And the Boulets themselves were *chef’s kiss this season. Their costumes were stunning, and they were as devious and funny as ever. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us in season seven!
