Hulu has many horror titles from this year that are currently streaming on its platform. We're talking about movies like Late Night with the Devil, Immaculate, The First Omen, Sting, Cuckoo and Alien: Romulus. However, the streaming giant only released three new horror original films in 2024.
Those horror movies were Hold Your Breath, Mr. Crocket and Carved. All three were released on Hulu in October, and like the horror fanatic I am, I watched them back to back. While they weren't the best horror films I've ever watched, they were entertaining enough to keep my attention. If you were on the fence about whether or not you should watch these movies, you should check out my ranking below.
I not only provided information about each film but also shared my thoughts and opinions. Of course, the movie ranked No. 1 was the one I enjoyed the most, and the one ranked No. 3 was the one I enjoyed the least.
3. Carved
Carved is a horror-comedy centering around a killer pumpkin who goes on a killing spree. On Halloween night in 1993, the employees of a historical reenactment village must band together to survive an onslaught by a vengeful, monstrous killer pumpkin. Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Corey Fogelmanis, Sasha Mason, Wyatt Lindner, Jonah Lees, and many others make up the cast.
So, here's my thing with Carved. I thought it was a fun, campy movie. It's not meant to be taken seriously, and maybe that's why some people didn't like it. It's full of dark humor, and it delivers on its slasher promise with its kill scenes featuring a good amount of gore. If you're looking for something quick and fun to watch, Carved should be your go-to.
2. Mr. Crocket
Mr. Crocket is based on the 2022 short film of the same name by Brandon Epsy. It follows a desperate mother who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue her son from a sinister, demonic children's TV host who is abducting children for his twisted purposes. Elvis Nolasco stars as the children's show host with a dark and twisted past, Mr. Emmanuel Crocket. Jerrika Hinton plays Summer Beverly, the desperate mother, and Ayden Gavin portrays Summer's son, Major Beverly.
What initially caught my attention about this film was its unique concept. Then, as I was watching it, I was in awe of its strong visuals and performances. Elvis Nolasco gives an outstanding performance as the menacing Mr. Crocket. I considered the practical effects to be excellent as well. If you love supernatural horror with emotional depth and unique visuals, Mr. Crocket is definitely worth a watch.
1. Hold Your Breath
Hold Your Breath saw Sarah Paulson's return to horror. It's a psychological horror film taking place against the backdrop of the relentless dust storms in 1930s Oklahoma. Paulson plays a woman named Margaret Bellum, whose grip on reality begins to fracture as she experiences unsettling hallucinations and overwhelming paranoia.
She becomes convinced that a dark and dangerous supernatural force lurks in the dust storms and haunts her family. Amiah Miller, Annaleigh Ashford, Alona Jane Robbins, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach join Paulson in the cast.
Sarah Paulson shows us time and time again that she's an amazing actress with every project she stars in, and she delivers as usual with this film. This isn't really a scary movie, so don't expect to jump out of your seat or anything. However, it will keep you guessing and wanting to know what's going to happen next. There's some nice twists and turns as well. If you enjoy mind-bending horror movies that play with your perception of reality, you need to add Hold Your Breath to your watchlist.
