After Woodbury’s assault on the prison fails, some of the soldiers are left scattering in the woods. One of them, a teen boy named Jody, stumbles across Carl and Hershel. He is ordered to put the gun he is carrying down, and Jody slowly starts doing so. Before he can place it down however, Carl shoots him, killing him instantly.

Hershel is surprised by Carl’s actions, later telling his concerns to Rick. The boy was handing over his weapon, and killing him was not necessary. At the same time, Carl was thinking about Andrew and how letting him go got his mother killed. He’s just trying to take no chances.

Carl had killed Shane as a zombie, but had never killed any living people before. It almost seemed too easy the way Carl was able to kill Jody. But he clearly has his reasons.
