The Weapons teaser is creepier than any horror movie I've seen this year

It seems likely that one of this year's most terrifying horror movies will be from Barbarian director Zach Cregger.

This year hasn't had any shortage of horror movies between Companion, Wolf Man, The Monkey, The Woman in the Yard, and Sinners, but we've yet to see the year's scariest film. I have a hunch that title will go to the upcoming film Weapons, the next movie from Barbarian director Zach Cregger.

New Line Cinema has started marketing the upcoming film, which will be released this August, and the newly released footage is far creepier than any movie I've seen yet in 2025.

To begin, the official New Line Cinema X account (formerly Twitter) posted a few pieces of found footage taken from neighborhood security cams showing the moment, at 2:17 a.m., when multiple children wandered out of their houses and disappeared. You can check out the different posts on their page and embedded below.

On Monday, Warner Bros. shared the official teaser trailer for Weapons, and we get to see more extensive footage of the movie's central mystery, which revolves around children from the same class vanishing at the same time on the same night (all but one child).

The teaser sets the eerie tone by zooming in on someone's digital alarm clock reading 2:17, followed by a voiceover of someone questioning Mr. Graff (Josh Brolin) about the disappearance. The person questioning Mr. Graff sounds doubtful of what happened that night.

"Those kids walked out of those homes. No one pulled them out. No one forced them. What do you see that I don't?"

The most disturbing part of the footage is that the kids seem to be running toward something, and they all have their arms outstretched in identical fashion. It's super creepy.

Prior to sharing the teasers, New Line Cinema had also launched a viral website, maybrookmissing.com. The homepage presents us with an in-universe news article from Maybrook News sharing more details on the case.

Since that night, the article shares, "little information has surfaced, and the case continues to baffle investigators."

As 1428 Elm previously reported, that site also reveals that Weapon and Barbarian likely occur in the same universe. An article at the bottom of the page is about Tess and the rental property from Barbarian.

Besides Brolin, Weapons stars Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan. Cregger wrote and directed the film. While the main story is about the disappearances, Weapons will feature several interconnected stories related to the missing kids.

Weapons will be released in theaters on August 8.
