Top 5 best Netflix horror movies released in 2024
By Mads Lennon
It is almost the start of a new year, meaning there is precious little time to cram in any 2024 horror movies you might have missed. Netflix didn't release that many this time, but we're ranking the few that stood out to us.
From a bloody shark attack thriller to a body-swapping comedy-horror film, the streaming service had some surprising standouts that might have been missed. Considering the streamer's catalog, that is totally understandable, but if you want to catch up and don't know where to start, this guide is for you!
Under Paris
A marine biologist and her team are on the hunt for a tagged mako shark they've been studying, so imagine their surprise when they find "Lilith," and she's grown significantly larger and later turns up in the River Seine in Paris just before a massive triathlon.
Anyone who loves shark attack movies and creature features will want to check out Under Paris. This French film wound up being quite popular on Netflix and rumor has it that the streamer is working on a sequel. While there have been many shark films over the years, Under Paris is surprisingly super effective.
Don't Move
What could be more horrifying than being trapped inside of your own body, unable to move, speak, or even breathe properly due to a paralytic agent coursing through your veins? Couple that with the fact a madman is chasing you and you have the plot of this tense cat-and-mouse Netflix thriller produced by Sam Raimi.
Released a couple of months ago as part of Netflix's annual "Netflix & Chills" special, Don't Move centers on Iris (Kelsey Asbille), a grieving mother who crosses paths with a serial killer who doses her with the frightening agent, forcing her to do whatever it takes to run, hide, and fight to survive before her body completely shuts down and leaves her at his mercy.
The Platform 2
The dystopian Vertical Self-Management Center returns in this sequel to the hit 2019 Spanish horror film. This time around, a new leader emerges and enforces a brutal law on the complex and another new character, Perempuán, played by Milena Smit. Perempuán slowly discovers the division between social factions within the center and tensions between them escalate throughout the film, building to a climactic final act. While not as clever as the first film, The Platform 2 is still worth a watch.
It's What's Inside
Netflix picked up this acclaimed horror film from last year's Sundance selection. It's What's Inside is about a group of friends who gather to celebrate a wedding. During the pre-wedding party, one of their mutual friends with whom the group is estranged shows up carrying a mysterious suitcase, and what's inside causes the entire evening to descend into chaos. A perfect pick if you're looking for some comedy in your horror.
Woman of the Hour
Anna Kendrick made quite the splash with her critically acclaimed directorial debut, a crime thriller film based on the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala, who infamously appeared on the 1978 reality show The Dating Game.
While the story takes some liberties with the truth, it's a riveting and timely tale that will resonate with women who have felt the genuine horror of being stalked or threatened by an unknown man lurking in the dark. Kendrick also stars as Sheryl Bradshaw (a fictionalized version of the real Cheryl Bradshaw), the game show contestant who would later go on a date with Rodney, unaware of his sinister agenda. In real life, Cheryl did not date Rodney.
