Written and helmed by Caroline Lindy, and based on her short film of the same name, Your Monster tells the story of a young woman whose life is in shambles after her longtime boyfriend suddenly breaks up with her while she's in the hospital. I know. That's pretty cruel!

Laura Franco, an actress in a happy five-year relationship, seemed to have it all. That is, until she received a cancer diagnosis. While her boyfriend initially supported her during her treatment, he unexpectedly ends their relationship while she's recovering from surgery. After finally being discharged from the hospital, Laura spends her days wallowing in her sorrows. However, her life takes a turn when she stumbles upon a mysterious, monstrous creature living in her closet. Through this unexpected connection, she finds the courage to reclaim her life and her voice in the process.

Modern-day scream queen Melissa Barrera, known for her roles in horror films like Scream, Scream VI and Abigail, stars as Laura Franco. She's joined by Tommy Dewey (Saturday Night, Pivoting) as the mysterious yet friendly monster lurking in Laura's closet. In addition, Edmund Donovan, Kayla Foster, and Meghann Fahy make up the rest of the cast.

I got the chance to see Your Monster when it was in theaters back in October 2024, and I've got to say, it exceeded my expectations. Now, I didn't think it was going to be a bad movie. That's just impossible with Barrera as the lead. However, I wasn't expecting to be so entertained. This movie has the perfect mix of horror, humor, and emotional depth, and it does a fantastic job of balancing all three. When the credits began to roll, I remember sitting in my seat in disbelief that it was over. I was completely hooked the entire time, and I was hoping the movie went on for just a bit longer.

Not only was I impressed by the unique plot, but also by Barrera and Dewey's outstanding performances. Their chemistry really made the film stand out, and they definitely need to reunite for another movie. Preferably another horror flick, please!

Now that Your Monster is about to hit Max, I can't wait to rewatch it. If you haven't seen it, I strongly recommend giving it a watch. There's a reason why it has a pretty high Tomatometer and Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
