New details have emerged about M. Night Shyamalan's next project, a supernatural romance book and movie he's collaborating on with best-selling author Nicholas Sparks.

People Magazine got an exclusive sneak peek at the duo's work. First up is the novel Remain, co-created by Sparks and Shyamalan. According to the outlet, Remain follows Tate Donovan, a New York architect recovering from a recent stay in a psychiatric facility after the loss of his sister.

Tate prepares to stay in Cape Cod and design a summer home for his best friend, and that's when he meets a woman who makes him question everything he thought he knew about the world. Remain will be published by Random House and released this fall.

You can check out the cover preview at the source. It's a beautiful, serene photo depicting a waterfront summer house set against a starry night sky.

In addition to the book, the pair are crafting a screenplay to be adapted into a movie. Thus far, 1428 Elm has learned the film will star Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor. The latest updates seemingly confirm that Gyllenhaal will play Tate, while Dyenvor will likely play his love interest, Wren.

"Collaborating with M. Night Shyamalan has been one of the highlights of my career. We are excited to share the next stage in this process: the beautiful book cover, designed by my longtime cover designer Flamur Tonuzi," said Sparks in a statement to People.

Shyamalan is best known for his psychological thriller films, most notably the Academy Award-nominated film The Sixth Sense. In recent years, he's directed movies like Trap, Knock at the Cabin, and Old. He was also the showrunner for the Apple TV+ Original series Servant, which wrapped its final season in 2023. Ahead of Remain, Shyamalan has directed more than 10 movies and his films have grossed over $3.2 billion at the global box office.

The upcoming book will be Sparks' 26th novel. Eleven of his previous books have been adapted into films, such as The Notebook and A Walk to Remember. His novels have sold over 150 million copies worldwide.

Remain will mark a genre shift for both Shyamalan and Sparks, as Sparks almost exclusively writes romantic stories while Shyamalan typically sticks with thrillers and horror movies. But both have dabbled outside of their respective comfort zones in the past. It'll be fascinating to see what their shared creativity creates.

Per People, the film adaptation of Remain will be produced by Shyamalan's company Blinding Edge Pictures. I'm assuming the movie is going to be released sometime in 2026.

Remain will be released on October 7, wherever books are sold, and is currently available to preorder.
