Here's why Dexter: Original Sin isn't new this week and when it will return

Four episodes remain of the first season of Dexter prequel series Original Sin, which premiered on Paramount+ with Showtime in December, but sadly, fans will have to wait to see how Dexter will wiggle out of his latest predicament because there isn't a new episode this week.

Dexter: Original Sin is taking a brief mid-season hiatus before returning with new episodes on January 24. On December 20, Paramount-owned Showtime chose to do a special two-episode drop, meaning we got to watch episodes 2 and 3 on the same day. It looks like the streamer wanted to shuffle around the schedule to prolong the season further into February.

Now, the finale will air on February 14, fittingly when Yellowjackets returns. Previous Dexter spinoff, Dexter: New Blood, aired alongside the premiere season of Yellowjackets, and both shows performed well for Paramount/Showtime.

It makes sense that the streamer would want to appeal to viewers who likely enjoy both shows. From a business standpoint, staggered releases are a good idea, especially since there is obvious overlap between the fandoms. Subscribers who might have been planning to cancel after Dexter: Original Sin wrapped will likely renew it to keep up with Yellowjackets season 3.

Remaining episodes release schedule

  • Episode 7, "The Big Bad Body Problem" - Jan. 24
  • Episode 8, "Business and Pleasure" - Jan. 31
  • Episode 9, "Blood Drive" - Feb. 7
  • Episode 10 (Season Finale), "Cold Blues" - Feb. 14

Paramount has not shared its intentions for the future of the Dexter prequel, but I do think there is a good chance the show will get renewed for a second season. The company is clearly very invested in Dexter as a franchise, having created eight seasons of the original series along with two spinoffs, another one releasing this year, and a second prequel revolving around the Trinity Killer in the works.

Even once Dexter: Original Sin wraps, we'll still have more to look forward to in 2025 as Michael C. Hall is set to return as the avenging serial killer for a sequel series releasing this summer titled Dexter: Resurrection.

What to expect from Dexter: Original Sin episode 7

When we last saw young Dexter, he was in yet another sticky predicament. After killing Levi Reed, Dexter drove toward his normal spot in the bayou, planning to feed Levi's body to the alligators, but found the whole area swarming with police. It turns out that the reptiles didn't finish eating loan shark Tony Ferrer the way Dexter intended. His arm washed ashore, triggering an investigation. It's bad timing all around, considering he had another body rattling around in his trunk. What now?

Well, as this is a prequel, we already know Dexter won't get caught, but in the main series, he has a different method of disposing of bodies, using a boat to take them out to sea (until scuba divers stumbled upon his graveyard). It seems likely that the next few episodes will get into how Dexter progressed from making alligator feed to an underwater dumping ground.

The first six episodes of Dexter: Original Sin are now available on Paramount+ with Showtime and new episodes return on January 24.
