Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in ‘Alien’ (20th Century Fox)

5. Alien

This series almost wouldn’t be included on this list, considering how convoluted the timeline has gotten since the original films from Ridley Scott. The controversial Alien 3 isn’t counted by most fans. Alien: Resurrection probably even more so.

It seemed that this franchise would ultimately be killed by the Predator in the Alien vs. Predator mini-franchise. The two AvP films are not considered to be canon for either the Alien or Predator franchises, but the Alien series isn’t over just yet (although Predator is finally being rebooted).

As some of you are certainly aware of, Ridley Scott returned to the franchise in recent years to add some new installments. In 2012, Scott released Prometheus, which served as an official prequel to the original film. While it had its own unique storyline, it was set in the same universe as those films.

Another film in the franchise, Alien: Covenant, is currently in the works with Scott back in the director’s chair. It will bring back the franchise’s best extra-terrestrial creatures, including those pesky face-huggers. This movie is scheduled to be released on August 4, 2017, with potential plans to do several more prequels leading up to the events in the original Alien movie.
