The Passage recap: Fanning sets his plan in motion

On this week’s episode of The Passage we find out the real reason Anthony Carter wound up on death row and Fanning makes a big move.

Last week on The Passage, we learned the truth about Shauna’s tragic past. This week, we delve into the story behind the reason Anthony Carter wound up on death row. It isn’t any less harrowing than Shauna’s traumatic tale, though for different reasons.

Carter was framed for the death of a woman he was seeing. She was remarkable, young, lively, and vibrant. She ignited a passion in Carter and he fell fast and hard. But this woman, Rachel, had a secret. A secret marriage. Carter was devastated by the fact Rachel had lied to him and even when she apologizes to him he struggles to forgive.

By the time he’s ready to talk to her again, Rachel is floating facedown in a swimming pool. The obvious answer to this story is that her husband killed her. As a black man, Anthony had all the cards stacked against him and the injustice he has suffered is insurmountable.

Fanning invades Carter’s mind and watches him relive the traumatic scene over and over again. He manipulates Carter by emphasizing how unfair it is that he was wrongly accused. At his encouragement, he forces Anthony to make a life-altering choice.

Back in reality, Carter is dying. He has a fever of 106 degrees and climbing, not even an ice bath can help bring his temperature down. Eventually, his heart gives out. But in his mind, the place where Fanning can interact with him, Carter gives in. Within seconds of his death, he transforms and reawakens as a full-blown viral, a bloodthirsty creature that chows down on the nearest hapless victim.

Jonas and Sykes barely survive the encounter and it would appear Jonas may have ingested some of Carter’s blood.

So how did Fanning “turn” Carter? That we don’t know yet, but the focal point of this week’s episode is about seeing how the virals can control the humans around them.

Paulson, one of the guards in charge of maintaining order in 4B has been fighting his own demons. He feels as if he “belongs” to one of the virals, a monstrous man that tied a girl beneath his truck and drove with her beneath it for miles before going on a 5-year long killing spree. He makes an ominous remark about them being the lab rats, perhaps they are, perhaps the virals are really the ones in control.

When Paulson can’t take it anymore he goes on a shooting spree, forcing Brad and Richards to work together to save everyone’s lives. As a former hostage negotiator, Brad tries to convince Paulson to stand down and just before Paulson can tell him of the horrific things he’s learned from 4B, Richards shoots him dead.

Clearly, Clarke would do anything to keep a lid on the dark agenda of Project NOAH but it’s not like he doesn’t have secrets of his own. Such as infatuation with Shauna Babcock that lead him to saving her life last week (an incident he passes off as a direct order from a higher-up, wonder how long before he gets caught in that lie?)

And speaking of Shauna, she too, is flexing her brain-traveling abilities by paying Amy a visit. She is kind of “the good cop” to Fanning’s bad. She wants Amy to make the choice to join them, similar to the ultimatum Fanning gave Carter, but with a friendlier approach.

But Amy has something Carter didn’t have. Something to live for, she has Brad and it is because of him she dismisses Shauna and tells her to leave.

Odds & Ends

  • Outside the blood-soaked world of Project NOAH, Lila and Lacey are working with a reporter to get the truth about the death row victims out into the public. She winds up dead not long after. This definitely won’t be an easy task and Lila may be in over her head. She’s lucky she has Lacey by her side.

A new episode of The Passage titled “How You Gonna Outrun the End of the World?” airs February 11th on FOX.
