What character will Bruce Campbell play in The Last Kids on Earth?

Bruce Campbell (as of last month) was working on The Last Kids on Earth and told us at 1428 Elm that he had completed a “substantial amount of it.” While we don’t have an idea of what character he will be playing, we thought it would be fun to see who he could possibly be in Max Brallier’s world.

Bruce Campbell will be wrapping up Season 1 of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in the next few weeks. Looming large on his horizon is the premiere of his latest effort, The Last Kids on Earth which will be unleashed on Netflix on Sept. 17.

What is interesting is that none of the performers other than Nick Wolfhard who will be playing the title role of Jack Sullivan have been assigned roles yet. There is quite a bit of talent attached to this project like Mark Hamill, Rosario Dawson, Catherine O’Hara and Keith David. So, naturally, fans want to know who they will be portraying.

At the moment that seems strange because after all, actors should know who their character are so that they can breathe life into them right? Evidently, that is not the case. Campbell weighed in on the subject with us last month in our interview:

"“You get your sides, just your scenes. Everyone’s secretive. Everyone’s afraid of piracy for a good reason. The irony is that actors sometimes don’t even know what they are doing. They will know the premise of the show and the other actors.”"

So, on that footnote, I thought it might be fun if we take a look at the very first book in Max Brallier’s The Last Kids on Earth series, and see who Bruce might be voicing. Now, as a disclaimer, I have no insider information or “exclusive.”

Assuming that the series starts at the beginning, I see three possibilities based on character description.

Dirk Savage

He is part of Jack’s monster slaying team. Apparently, at one time, he was the school bully. Not only does he have a cool name but he is a fighting machine.

He’s bigger and stronger than most boys his age. Truth be told and this isn’t always the case with animated features, usually the actor resembles his on-screen counterpart. Savage is sort of like the baby Negan of the gang.

And while I don’t want to overstate the obvious, he sort of has a prominent jawline. Well, you be the judge.

Rover

This is Jack’s pet monster. Rover looks like a combination of a Grizzly and a lion. He is extremely loyal and will stick by his best friend’s side through thick and thin.

Yes, I know. He is an animal but Bruce was the voice of Fugax in The Ant Bully and in Cars 2 he was a car, Rod “Torque” Redline. It doesn’t seem outside the realm of possibility that he could play the lead character’s companion.

Let’s face it. Rover is an imposing figure. He looks laidback and cuddly with Jack but don’t let his exterior fool you.

Blarg

Ash Williams had Kandar the Destroyer in the last season of Ash vs Evil Dead to vanquish, Jack has Blarg. By all accounts, this monster is nothing to look at. According to his description, “he smells like 3-day-old barf and has disgusting tentacles.”

However, he is preternaturally intelligent. Blarg sure is intimidating standing over 40 feet tall but couple that with smarts and he can be downright terrifying for teenagers to have to combat.

Let’s face it, which actor excels at playing larger than life personalities? Who played Elvis and Ronald Reagan? Bruce Campbell. I think he’s up to the task. After all, slaying him is the “ultimate feat of Apocalyptic Success.”

Hopefully, an announcement will be made in the not so distant future as to who (or what) Bruce will be portraying in The Last Kids on Earth. Catch the Netflix series debuting on Sept. 17.
