Exploring Sexy Vampires with comedic duo Key & Peele
Key & Peele (Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele) explore all of the ridiculous tropes of the sexy vampire genre and it is hysterical!
Key & Peele (Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele) are both alumni of Mad TV. Before Jordan became an Oscar winner, he was one half of the most talented comedic duos around. After both performers honed their craft doing sketches on the Fox show, they made the jump to Comedy Central.
What made their act so successful was their ability to blend their keen insight on politics, popular culture and societal issues with razor sharp wit. It was a winning combination.
Recently, the pair’s YouTube channel, released a video just in time for the Halloween season. The subject, Sexy Vampires. Let’s face each year, prior to Oct. 31, we are inundated with horror movies, costumes, etc. to get everyone ready for the magic night.
One of the holiday trends that has become rather absurd is the “Sexy (insert character name) costumes.” This year, the hot number was Mr. Rogers. Why on earth anyone would turn a beloved children’s icon into a waitress at the Tilted Kilt is beyond my comprehension but whatever floats your boat.

Personally, I am waiting for a line of costumes for guys, you know, “Stud Muffin Freddy Krueger,” “Steamy Michael Myers…” I doubt that will ever happen.
All of this falls in line with Key & Peele’s take on the glam vampire era. Back when Bela Lugosi played the count, he looked the part, dressed to the nines. There were no leather leggings or puffy shirts for him.
As much as I love The Lost Boys, the film started the whole trend of vamps being like rock gods complete with eyeliner, fabulous attire and wild hairstyles. To be fair though, I guess the phenomenon of the creatures of the night being sexy can be traced back to the early 80’s before Joel Schumacher’s film ever came on the scene to Tony Scott’s The Hunger.
David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon were just as glam and hormonally charged. Francis Coppola’s take on the Dracula legend in 1992, although set in the 1800’s, had impossibly attractive people like the internet’s boyfriend, Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder and Sadie Frost.
Every time Gary Oldman was on screen as Vlad, there was so much sexual tension you could feel it in the audience. You have the same vibe in Interview with the Vampire and Ginger Snaps which is very sensual in parts.
Of course, the Twilight series of movies had the same erotic elements with Bella and Edward plus sparkles! Key & Peele’s take is more on the goth/glam side. Everyone dresses in black, leather, bustiers, silk shirts, the less clad they are the better.
To see Jordan Peele with flowing locks, in leather pants with chains and a satiny shirt is amazing. He has the whole act down pat. Even the music that is used in the video is reminiscent of some dark, hip club that plays the same chill out music over and over again.
Both comedians know that particular subgenre’s tropes and exploit them for full comedic effect. Watch and enjoy!
What a way to kick off Halloween month, wouldn’t you agree?
