Maniac Cop is being rebooted as a TV series by HBO. Crazy Matt Cordell is on the loose again but this time in the City of Angels.

Maniac Cop is reborn but this time as a TV series on HBO. Nicolas Winding Refn is behind the reboot based on William Lustig’s horror cult film classic of the late 80’s starring Bruce Campbell, Tom Atkins, Laurene Landon and Robert Z’Dar.

According to Deadline, Refn will be producing along with John Hyams. HBO has greenlit the project which was originally supposed to be a movie. However, as with some ideas in Hollywood, not everything comes to fruition.

Refn wanted to explore the world of Maniac Cop more in depth and felt that converting the project to a series made sense. He envisions “social commentary on the decline of civilization” intertwined with action packed horror which makes this an extremely ambitious effort.

The good news for fans of the original trilogy is that William Lustig has signed on to be an executive producer. Other than that, this re-imagining is taking place in an entirely different world.

More from Horror on TV

Los Angeles will be the stand-in for the gritty streets of New York this time around. The stories will be focusing on cops and criminals with the centerpiece that ties everything together being the supernatural being in blue who is terrorizing citizens. Almost in a Purge like fashion, unbridled chaos starts to happen as people begin to act out of fear.

It will be interesting to see how Refn and Hyams are able to elevate this classic slasher. Is Maniac Cop a sustainable episodic series? Will audiences become bored with kills of the week?

Robert Z’Dar is irreplaceable as far as I am concerned. The new, improved Matt Cordell is going to have some tall shoes to fill so whoever gets cast better have some serious acting chops. Same can be said for the Tom Atkins and Bruce Campbell roles if they go traditional for the pilot episode with a straight up retelling of the movie.
