This year gave us a lot of brilliant new horror films, but unfortunately, it also produced several terrible ones. What were the worst scary movies of the year?

Between Us, Midsommar, Doctor Sleep, and all the other terrific horror films and television shows produced this year, it’s easy to forget there were quite a few duds mixed in too. We’re recapping the five worst horror movies released in 2019.

5. The Prodigy

The Prodigy was yet another horror film about an evil kid. It doesn’t offer anything new to the trope and is just an overly dark movie that never provides enough thrills.

Admittedly, The Prodigy is extremely brutal, more so than one might expect from a film like this one. They push their child star to some dark places. But at the end of the day, it was very forgettable.

4. Black Christmas

The idea of creating a feminist slasher film is awesome, but we’ve seen them done better than Black Christmas.

The film takes important topics and tries to beat the audience over the head with its themes, to the point where it often feels like it’s mocking women rather than cheering them on.

While the idea of the film wasn’t terrible, its execution felt ultimately lackluster and at worst, cringe-inducing.

3. The Curse of La Llorona

As an outlier in The Conjuring franchise, no one expected much from The Curse of La Llorona. That’s a good thing since the movie offers little enjoyment. It’s a drab affair about a legendary icon in Mexican folklore.

It doesn’t help that the film borders on being racist in several moments since it doesn’t always respect the heritage of the story it’s trying to tell. Overall, it’s easily the worst entry into this particular horror franchise.

2. The Haunting of Sharon Tate

When will Hollywood let poor Sharon Tate rest in peace? Certainly not in 2019. The Haunting of Sharon Tate was another exploitative movie trying to capitalize on her tragic murder. Hilary Duff does her best with the material but unfortunately, this is probably a movie that should have been left on the cutting room floor.

1. The Silence

After the success of films like Bird Box and A Quiet Place, it’s not too surprising that we saw Netflix try to cash in on the phenomenon. The Silence is set in a world where people have to be quiet at all times to keep the strange pterodactyl-looking creatures from attacking them.

Unfortunately, The Silence was made too late. Audiences had already seen a similar concept executed much better in the previously mentioned films and this one was completely forgotten about in about a week.
