Scream 5: Neve Campbell in talks but do we really need this sequel?
Neve Campbell is in talks to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott in Scream 5. While nostalgia is all the rage, do we need this sequel?
Neve Campbell spoke to Rotten Tomatoes recently about her new movie, Castle in the Ground which is being released on Video on Demand on May 15. During the interview for the site’s Five Favorite Films segment, of course, the line of questioning turned to Scream 5.
What we know so far is that Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be directing. Fresh off their Ready or Not success, the duo definitely respects Wes Craven and his franchise. They reached out to Campbell in a letter telling her how the late horror master was an inspiration to them.
The actress went on to reveal that she was having conversations with Spyglass Media about reprising her role of Sidney Prescott for the proposed sequel. However, COVID-19 struck and everything in Hollywood came to a screeching halt.
Apparently, Campbell was in the beginning stages of negotiating her return. That being said, while everyone is riding the nostalgia train in the entertainment industry, why must we run franchises into the ground?
Scream 4 was in theaters nine years ago. At that time, it only grossed over $38 M ranking it at number 83 for 2011.
Scream 3 which was released in 2000 made over $89 M and made it to number 22 at the box office. Look, we get it. Audiences want to see the Woodsboro gang reunite. Some fans have even imagined a twist where Sidney becomes Ghostface.

Since it would appear as if Spyglass Media is eventually going to go through with this production, then in order to keep the franchise fresh, why not infuse new blood into it? Having Neve Campbell reprise Sidney would help to ease the older fans of the franchise into a story filled with new characters.
Original writer, Kevin Williamson is reported to be an executive producer. It would be nice to see him pen the script but chances are Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett probably have someone else in mind for that task. More than likely, Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy.
There have even been rumors that Hayden Panettiere might be willing to return as Kirby after she posted a picture of herself debuting a pixie haircut on Twitter a few months ago with the caption, “Channeling my inner #Kirby.”
David Arquette has also expressed interest in having Dewey play a part in Scream 5 and even Rose McGowan pitched a potential plotline idea to Indie Wire last month where her character Tatum, had a twin that would be hellbent on avenging her sister’s death.
If Scream 5 does come to fruition it will take time. Rest assured, as this story develops, more speculation will be on the horizon.
Catch Neve Campbell in Castle in the Ground on VOD on May 15.
