By Mads Lennon
I don’t know about you but I like to consider August as part of the Halloween season because, why not? Then again, the Halloween spirit remains vital all year for me. Either way, with a new month upon us, we’re taking a look at the best new horror shows headed our way for August 2021.
Whether you’re excited for the next iteration of Slasher, now at its new home on Shudder, the gothic horror adaptation of Stephen King’s Jerusalem’s Lot, or the return of horror favorites like American Horror Story and The Walking Dead, August has some awesome new horror shows on the way.
7 new horror shows to watch this August
7. Chapelwaite
Based on Stephen King’s short story Jerusalem’s Lot (a prequel to Salem’s Lot) from his acclaimed Night Shift collection, Chapelwaite is a historical horror series premiering on EPIX later this month. After laying his wife to rest at sea, Charles Boone (Adrien Brody) takes his children to his ancestral home Chapelwaite, in the small, creepy town of Preacher’s Corners.
Once there, Charles realizes that he and his family are unwelcome due to his family’s dark history. Emily Hampshire of Schitt’s Creek and 12 Monkeys fame also stars. Chapelwaite premieres on August 22.
6. Slasher: Flesh & Blood
This anthology horror series returns at its third new home at Shudder! Slasher originated on the now-defunct Chiller network before migrating to Netflix. The upcoming fourth season, titled Slasher: Flesh & Blood, premieres on Shudder on August 12.
The newest season follows a wealthy, dysfunctional family as they gather at their secluded island estate for a reunion. There they find they will be pitted against each other in a cruel competition, all the while being stalked by a mysterious killer.
5. American Horror Story: Double Feature
American Horror Story finally returns to FX on August 25. The tenth season, subtitled “Double Feature”, will tell two stories. The first part, “Red Tide,” takes place by the sea and the second part, “Death Valley,” is by the sand. Beyond that, not much else has been revealed apart from the cast and promotional material which features lots of aliens and sirens. AHS favorites like Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Billie Lourd, Lily Rabe, and more will be returning.
4. Clickbait
Adrien Grenier plays a man abducted in this upcoming Netflix thriller. His captor livestreams his kidnapping and says that if the video gets 5 million livestreams, then Nick Brewer will be killed. Nick’s family and friends must race against the clock to rescue him, but might be surprised by what they learn about him in the process. Clickbait premieres on August 25.
3. Brand New Cherry Flavor
Based on Todd Grimson’s novel of the same name, Brand New Cherry Flavor teases a mesmerizing premise featuring Hollywood in the 1990s, black magic, psychedelics, and kittens. It looks like a crazy psychological revenge thriller that sets up a predatory relationship between a big-time Hollywood producer and his ingenue. Brand New Cherry Flavor premieres on Netflix on August 13.
2. UFO
Beginning this Sunday, August 8, on Showtime, UFO is a four-part docuseries from J.J. Abrams exploring our fascination with extraterrestrial life and unidentified flying objects. The docuseries dives deep into what the government and other clandestine operations might have to gain by keeping their findings a secret.
1. The Walking Dead: Season 11
The final season of AMC’s hit zombie show The Walking Dead premieres on August 22 on AMC. It will consist of 24 episodes split into three, eight-episode parts.
