When you think of modern scream queens, who comes to mind? For us, we think of amazingly talented actresses such as Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Samara Weaving, Anya Taylor-Joy, Mia Goth, Sophie Thatcher, and Maika Monroe. While all of these actresses have cemented their place in the horror genre with unforgettable performances, one name that really stands out for us is Maika Monroe.
She is best known for starring in horror films such as It Follows, Villains, Watcher and Significant Other. After taking a short break from the horror world and starring in the action thriller God Is a Bullet in 2023, Monroe finally made her return to the genre with Longlegs in 2024. This horror thriller went on to become both a commercial and critical success, grossing over $126 million worldwide against a budget of less than $10 million. Critics and viewers alike praised the film for its strong and memorable performances, chilling atmosphere, unsettling tone, and beautiful yet haunting cinematography. It was also one of the most talked about horror movies of last year.
Now, it's currently the talk of the town as it recently made its streaming debut. If you're a Hulu subscriber, you can now watch Longlegs on the platform. While that's exciting, we do have some disappointing news to share regarding another one of Monroe's best horror films that's currently streaming on Hulu.
Sadly, the 2022 psychological horror Watcher will be departing Hulu next week. The exact departure date is Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025. As of Feb. 18, you have exactly a week before it leaves the platform. So, if you haven't had a chance to watch Watcher yet, now is the time to catch it before it's gone. But wait! Let's say you forget to watch it before the departure date or miss your chance on Hulu. There's no need to panic. The horror flick might be leaving Hulu, but it's headed to another popular streaming platform right after.
Watcher starring Maika Monroe will stream on Netflix
On Feb. 25, you can expect to see Watcher available to stream on Netflix. This will be one of the horror film's streaming homes for a bit. Since Watcher is not a Netflix original and the streaming giant only acquired the streaming rights, the horror flick will eventually leave this platform as well. That's something to keep in mind. Besides Netflix, Watcher will still be available to stream on AMC+ and Shudder. Or, you also have the option to rent or purchase the movie via digital retailers such as Prime Video, Google Play, Fandango at Home, Apple TV, YouTube TV, etc.
Written and directed by Chloe Okuno, Watcher stars Monroe as Julia, a young woman who relocates to Bucharest with her boyfriend, Francis, for his job. However, as she settles into the unfamiliar city, Julia begins to feel increasingly isolated and uneasy when she notices a strange man in the building across from hers who seems to be watching her closely. With a serial killer on the loose and no one believing her claims, Julia is forced to take matters into her own hands by confronting the man she believes is stalking her.
Karl Glusman (Civil War, The Bikeriders) joins Monroe in the cast as Julia's boyfriend, Francis. The rest of the cast is made up of Burn Gorman, Tudor Petruț, Mădălina Anea, Cristina Deleanu, Daniel Nuță, and Ciubuciu Bogdan Alexandru.
