6 horror shows that are significantly scarier than Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets is known for its eerie atmosphere, psychological intensity, and mix of survival horror and mystery. It might not be the most terrifying show out there, but its slow-burning dread and disturbing themes create a sense of unease that sticks with you. There's a reason why people keep coming back and why it has made it to three seasons so far. No matter how unsettling the show gets, it never fails to keep viewers on edge and craving more.

However, if you're seeking even greater levels of fear and are looking for something even darker and more unnerving, we've got a good list of six horror shows that crank up the intensity to terrifying new heights. They will grip you from the very first moment and never let go, which makes them enjoyable for anyone looking for an even more intense thrill. Check out our list below!

Marianne (2019)

  • Cast: Victoire Du Bois, Lucie Boujenah, Tiphaine Daviot, Mireille Herbstmeyer
  • Where to watch: Netflix

Netflix might not carry the best horror content, but if you ever come across this underrated horror series, you're in for a treat. I'm still not over the streaming giant canceling it after only one season. It definitely deserved better, especially considering the show’s incredible potential. There were so many ways this series could have gone if it had been given the chance, with even the show's creator stating that he had plans for at least two more seasons.

However, don't let its cancellation stop you from checking it out. While the first season left space for an expanded story, it still offers a gripping and complete narrative. Marianne is a French horror series that centers around a best-selling horror writer named Emma. Emma is haunted by the very character she created, a terrifying, witch-like entity named Marianne. As Marianne starts to materialize in the real world and terrorize Emma and her loved ones, Emma is forced to confront the terrifying truth that the evil she brought to life in her stories has escaped the pages and is now intent on causing destruction.

Them: The Scare (2024)

  • Cast: Deborah Ayorinde, Pam Grier, Luke James, Joshua J. Williams, Jeremy Bobb
  • Where to watch: Prime Video

There have been two seasons of Them so far, but I'd argue and say that the second installment was scarier. However, I still strongly recommend watching both seasons of the horror anthology, as they are both deeply unsettling and full of unnerving tension. Them: The Scare, otherwise known as Them season 2, moves the story from the '50s to the '90s and changes locations. The story is set in 1991 Los Angeles and follows LAPD Homicide Detective Dawn Reeve, who is tasked with investigating the brutal murder of a foster home mother. But as she works to catch the killer, she soon finds her life and the lives of her loved ones in grave danger as she becomes the target of a supernatural threat.

From (2022-)

  • Cast: Harold Perrineau, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, David Alpay, Elizabeth Saunders, Shaun Majumder
  • Where to watch: MGM+

I don't think From gets enough attention in discussions about the best horror television shows, and honestly, I'd considered it a criminally underrated series. Yes, it has made it to three seasons so far, with a fourth season in the works, but it still flies under the radar for many horror fans. This is a real shame because it delivers some of the most intense and unsettling moments in horror TV. How could anyone want to miss out on a show like this?

Imagine being trapped in a town and unable to leave. That's already scary, right? Okay, now imagine that the town is filled with horrific, supernatural creatures that only come out at night, hunting anyone they can find. Would you survive? Who would you join forces with? That's basically what From is about. A bunch of residents are stuck in a town with no way out, forced to navigate a terrifying reality where they must survive each night.

The Walking Dead (2010-2022)

  • Cast: Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs
  • Where to watch: Netflix

We had to include The Walking Dead, undoubtedly one of the greatest zombie series in TV history. While many zombie shows have come and gone, none have had the lasting impact like TWD. With 11 seasons and numerous spinoffs, who else is doing it quite like them? I'll wait. What makes this show scary isn’t just the relentless walkers, but the ongoing tension of existing in a world where trust is scarce, survival is never guaranteed, and every decision could be life or death. Would you survive in a world like that?

The world has been overrun by zombies, and the remaining survivors are left to navigate a brutal, unforgiving landscape. In order to survive, they must evade walkers, form uneasy alliances, adapt to their harsh new reality, and make difficult choices that test their humanity. But in this world, the true danger isn’t always the walkers. Sometimes, it's the other survivors who are willing to do anything to secure their own survival, even if it means betraying others.

The Haunting of Hill House (2018)

  • Cast: Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, Victoria Pedretti
  • Where to watch: Netflix

The Haunting of Hill House is hands down Mike Flanagan's best horror show, with Midnight Mass coming in as a close second. It's got everything you'd want in a horror series: a rich and detailed storyline, an eerie atmosphere, well-developed characters, and genuinely terrifying moments. Watch the video above, and you'll see exactly what I mean when I say it delivers some truly frightening moments. I mean, that one jump scare in the car... I'm getting chills just thinking about it!

Loosely based on Shirley Jackson's gothic horror novel of the same name, The Haunting of Hill House takes place in two timelines. One timeline follows the Crain family as adults, still deeply affected by the traumatic events they experienced in the eerie Hill House. The other timeline delves into their childhood, when they lived in the house, unaware of the dark supernatural forces that haunted them.

Black Summer (2019-2021)

  • Cast: Jaime King, Justin Chu Cary, Christine Lee, Sal Velez Jr., Kelsey Flower, Erika Hau, Gwynyth Walsh
  • Where to watch: Netflix

Alright. It felt fitting to include another good zombie show on the list, and it's just as intense and scary as The Walking Dead. I'm talking about the horror drama Black Summer. However, it just didn't receive as much love as TWD and was ultimately canceled after two seasons. All that wasted potential...

Serving as a spinoff of Z Nation, Black Summer takes place in a world where the zombie apocalypse is just beginning. We follow a desperate mother named Rose, who is separated from her daughter during the chaos of the outbreak, and sets out on a perilous journey to reunite with her. She faces increasingly dangerous obstacles along her journey, but nothing will stop her from finding her daughter. The series also focuses on other survivors trying to navigate the brutal new world.
