One of the most eagerly awaited horror films of the year is Sony Pictures' I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. With reboots trending, this marks the franchise’s first new film since 2006. The most recent addition was Amazon's I Know What You Did Last Summer series, but it was short-lived, ending after just one season. However, based on what we know about this new reboot, aka legacy sequel, it has the potential to be a major success.

With excitement building for the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, fans are eagerly searching for every possible clue about what’s in store. To keep you up to date, here are some key updates about the highly anticipated horror sequel that you may have missed.

1. I Know What You Did Last Summer is hitting theaters in summer 2025

Back in May 2024, Sony Pictures announced that it had set a theatrical release date for its new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie. It handed out a summer 2025 release, which couldn't be more fitting for a film centered around a deadly secret, a vengeful killer, and the eerie tension of a summer gone wrong. The exact release date is Friday, July 18, 2025. Fortunately, no other horror movie has the same release date, giving I Know What You Did Last Summer the perfect opportunity to dominate the summer box office.

2. Who's in the cast and crew?

So, who’s behind the slasher sequel and who will be starring in it? The movie is directed by American filmmaker and producer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, marking her first venture into the horror genre. Previously, Robinson directed romantic comedies and comedies like Someone Great and Do Revenge. She co-created the film's story alongside Leah McKendrick (known for Scrambled and M.F.A.), and together with Sam Lansky, they crafted the full script.

Robinson also serves as an executive producer on the project along with Jackie Shenoo and Karina Rahardja. Additionally, Neal H. Moritz is a producer with Columbia Pictures as the production company behind the film. Sony Pictures Releasing is the distributor.

Now, here comes the really exciting part! When it comes to who you can expect to see in the slasher, you can expect to see talented actors such as Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Gabbriette Bechtel, Austin Nichols, Lola Tung, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez. But that's not all! There are two original I Know What You Did Last Summer cast members confirmed to star in the slasher as well. They are Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. Hewitt reprises her role as final girl Julie James while Prinze Jr. returns as final boy Ray Bronson.

3. Production on I Know What You Did Last Summer has already wrapped

The cameras reportedly started rolling in New South Wales, Australia, in December 2024, with the official I Know What You Did Last Summer Instagram page announcing the exciting news through a post. However, it seems production may have actually started earlier, as indicated by a November 2024 Instagram post from Sarah Michelle Gellar. Known for her role as Helen Shivers in the original film, Gellar shared a behind-the-scenes photo from the reboot’s set. If you didn’t know, Gellar is married to Freddie Prinze Jr., and she was visiting the set to support him.

More filming reportedly took place in Los Angeles, California in February and March 2025, with everything finally wrapping up on March 13.

4. The official poster has dropped and plot details revealed

On March 27, we were finally given more details about the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. Sony Pictures unveiled the official poster for the slasher film and also shared a glimpse of the plot, revealing what the movie will be about. After taking a look at the poster, we're even more excited about the reboot. It seems to tease the iconic fisherman's return. However, there's a chance that the antagonist might not be a fisherman but a fisherwoman, according to one of the movie's stars. Dun dun duuun!

These juicy deets came out in a recent interview with Collider when Jonah Hauer-King hinted that the villain might not actually be a fisherman after all. I guess we'll have to wait and see the movie to find out!
