Dexter: Resurrection continues filming in New York City and that means more cast announcements are on the way! Variety has confirmed that How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris has joined the cast of the upcoming sequel series.
Resurrection will pick up where Dexter: New Blood left off. If you're struggling to keep up with all of the various Dexter projects, I'll break it down for you. The parent series, Dexter, spawned New Blood as a follow-up and Resurrection takes place after that. There's also a prequel series titled Dexter: Original Sin that follows a young Dexter as he becomes the avenging serial killer we later know him as.
Additionally, another Dexter prequel series is in development centered on John Lithgow's antagonistic character Arthur Mitchell, also known as the Trinity Killer.
Harris has been cast as someone named "Lowell" in Resurrection. No other details about who he's playing have been provided yet. His casting is the latest after Krysten Ritter, who will portray a female serial killer known by her alter ego "Lady Vengeance." Apart from Ritter and Harris, the spinoff series features Peter Dinklage as a secretive billionaire Leon Prater and Uma Thurman as Charley, a former Special Ops agent and Leon's head of security.
We still don't know what Resurrection will be about, although one can guess. Dexter's identity as the Bay Harbor Butcher was revealed at the end of New Blood and he barely survived a brush with death after being shot by his own son, Harrison (Jack Alcott). That means Dexter is probably now a fugitive on the run somewhere. Michael C. Hall will reprise his titular role and Alcott will also be back alongside other Dexter mainstays like James Remar as Harry Morgan and David Zayas as Detective Angel Batista.
Unlike the others, however, both Harris and Ritter are appearing in guest roles rather than as series regulars, which makes it seem like they could end up on Dexter's table. If they're only in a limited role, it lessens the chance of either being the overall big bad, but then again, you never know.
Although Harris is better known for his comedic roles like the aforementioned CBS sitcom, he's dabbled in darker genres a few times with projects like American Horror Story: Freak Show and even David Fincher's crime thriller Gone Girl.
Dexter: Resurrection will reportedly air sometime later this year exclusively on Paramount+ with Showtime.
