7 popular horror shows that have been renewed (and 7 that were canceled)

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE | AMC

There are tons of horror movies and shows in the works for 2025, including the highly anticipated debuts of It: Welcome to Derry and Alien: Earth, plus the return of Yellowjackets, Stranger Things, and Wednesday. It's hard to keep up with all of the recent scary television shows that have been renewed (or canceled) as of late, so we've created a handy guide to put you on the right track.

The following list is dedicated to noting the series that have scored renewals recently, along with all of the horror shows that have been canceled within the last year or so. Shows that will return soon were left off of the list to focus on series that viewers might not realize are confirmed coming back.

Interview with the Vampire

AMC's best series will be returning for another season! Based on Anne Rice's classic Vampire Chronicles books, Interview with the Vampire has revitalized the story of Louis and Lestat for a new generation.

The network is expanding its Anne Rice Universe with a third season of the vampire drama, to be inspired by The Vampire Lestat, which sees Lestat's rise to fame as a rock star as he tries to tell his side of the story, refuting his portrayal in Daniel Molloy's book, Interview with the Vampire. Mayfair Witches is currently in its second season, and a third show set in the Anne Rice Universe is also in the works based on the secretive Talamasca.

From

This compelling dark mystery series from MGM+ will return for a fourth season! Good thing, too, since the season 3 finale delivered one hell of a cliffhanger while simultaneously teasing some game-changing events for the show moving forward. Like the previous seasons, season 4 will consist of 10 episodes, with filming set to start later this year.

ELLA PURNELL in SWEETPEA | STARZ

Sweetpea

Ella Purnell's devilishly fun dramedy Sweetpea will be back for another season. The Starz show features Purnell as a troubled young woman named Rhiannon struggling with violent urges until one day, she snaps in a murderous rage.

JOEL EDGERTON in DARK MATTER | APPLE TV+

Dark Matter

The interdimensional sci-fi series Dark Matter from Apple TV+ is coming back at some point and will likely include many more mind-boggling mysteries moving forward. Based on the novel by Blake Crouch, Dark Matter stars Joel Edgerton as a physicist who gets abducted one night and dropped into an alternate universe.

ALICE IN BORDERLAND | KUMIKO TSUCHIYA/NETFLIX

Alice in Borderland

This addictive sci-fi thriller series is expected to return at some point in 2025 after more than two years of waiting since the second season debuted. Alice in Borderland, like Squid Game, focuses on a group of people trapped and forced to play a series of deadly games.

American Horror Story

The long-running horror anthology show from Ryan Murphy was previously renewed through season 13, but there haven't been any updates or news regarding the 13th season yet. Season 12 aired in two parts, split between fall 2023 and 2024, due to the strikes.

Squid Game

Netflix has renewed its mega-successful Korean series for a third and final season. Although season 2 premiered in December 2024, the third season is expected to arrive sooner rather than later, with a June 27 premiere date.

Recently canceled horror shows

Chandler Kinney in Pretty Little Liars: Summer Schoo
Pretty Little Liars: Summer School on Max

Pretty Little Liars

It's a shame Max canceled its horror-themed Pretty Little Liars reboot. Admittedly, the second season wasn't as strong as the first, but it was still a highly entertaining show anchored by great chemistry and a genuine camaraderie between its main girls. The female friendship at the core of this slasher series helped to elevate it above other teen dramas and made it a compelling mystery to return to week after week.

CHUCKY | SYFY

Chucky

Another bitter pill to swallow, especially as Chucky appeared to be one of Syfy's most successful shows. A continuation of the highly popular movies started by the 1988 Child's Play by creator Don Mancini, the series reunited all of the original players along with an inspiring cast of newcomers to bring Chucky's hijinks to TV. Mancini has said that Chucky will return in the future, but it's a shame it won't be on the show we'd come to love. It would have been nice to at least get one final season.

George Rexstrew as Edwin Payne, Kassius Nelson as Crystal Palace and Jayden Revri as Charles Rowland
DEAD BOY DETECTIVES | ED ARAQUEL/NETFLIX

Dead Boy Detectives & The Sandman

Dead Boy Detectives was a charming and smart teen supernatural series that would have been at home on The CW back in its glory days. But it didn't seem to drum up strong viewership numbers on Netflix, even with its connection to the more popular dark fantasy show The Sandman. Now, both of them are canceled, and considering everything that has been alleged about Neil Gaiman, it's probably for the best.

HYSTERIA! | PEACOCK

Hysteria!

Peacock recently canceled both of its 2024 horror shows. Hysteria! was the most recent of the two cancellations. The series followed a group of teenagers in a metal band who use the death of the school's quarterback to drum up fear about Satanism, leaning into the potential that would come from their band having real street cred. But their plan backfires when the town genuinely starts to believe that they're summoning demons and have something to do with everything going wrong as of late.

TEACUP | MARK HILL/PEACOCK

Teacup

Based on Stinger by Robert R. McCammon, Teacup was an intimate horror show about a group of disparate people trapped on a rural farm while an alien threat hovers just on the edges. Perfect for fans of dark mysteries, Teacup started strong and then lost some momentum as the show progressed. Thankfully, both Peacock series have decent endings that wrap up the most pressing storylines.

Aasif Mandvi as Ben Shakir, Katja Herbers as Kristen Bouchard and Mike Colter as David Acosta sit around the fire
EVIL | ALYSSA LONGCHAMP/PARAMOUNT+

Evil

A cancellation that remains baffling to this day. Evil only became increasingly successful the longer it ran on Paramount+, seeing as it would repeatedly land in the Nielsen streaming charts. However, for some reason, the streaming service still canceled it after its fourth season. The only good thing is that the execs gave the writers and actors an extended four episodes to wrap up the story, but we still miss hanging out with Kristen, Ben, and David.
