Beetlejuice is all the rage again, and that’s not surprising with the sequel coming to theaters. Of course, once you’ve watched the two movies, you want something else like it.

The horror-comedy genre is a great one. It allows for laughter, cheesy horror tropes, and jump scares that are sure to get the blood pumping in everyone. There are also some cheesy one-liners and dance moments that will always leave an impression.

While there is nothing quite like Beetlejuice, there are some great movies that have a similar vibe. Here are five you’ll want to put on next.

Gremlins (1984)

Let’s start with another horror-comedy. Gremlins puts the focus on a set of alien creatures that cause havoc at Christmas. It’s all thanks to one boy named Billy not being able to follow instructions about not getting Gizmo wet or not feeding him after midnight. Honestly, just follow instructions, and bad things won’t happen!

Billy ends up having to save New York from the bunch of dangerous creatures looking to cause havoc. There is a sequel to follow up—you would think Billy would learn his lesson!—and there is an animated series on Max that gives us the origins of the Mogwai. Overall, there’s a great mixture of comedy, horror, and love told throughout the movies.

Clue (1985)

You know the board game. Now it’s time to watch the movie that is based on that popular board game. It stars Tim Curry, so you know it’s going to be absolutely brilliant when it comes to the comedic timing.

This is more in the crime realm than the horror, but it’s the mixture of genres that makes it a lot like Beetlejuice. The whole point of the movie is to have fun, while you try to figure out who the murderer is. The actual answers may just end up surprising you! There are all the favorite characters from the game, all the weapons and rooms you’ve come to know, and some quirky and cheesy writing to entertain.

Drop Dead Fred (1991)

The 1990s was one of the best decades for mixing genres. It brought some of the best comedy movies, as well. Drop Dead Fred is a must, although it is more comedy-fantasy rather than comedy-horror. It works, though!

The movie follows Lizzie, an unhappy housewife who is looking for any sort of escape. That wish is granted when her imaginary friend from her childhood, Drop Dead Fred, turns up. Of course, he takes her on some wild adventures as she seeks anything other than the ordinary, but sometimes, maybe you should be careful what you wish for.

You can currently only buy or rent the movie via Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, iTunes, and other digital retailers.

Mars Attacks! (1996)

Do you love alien invasion movies? You need something that is hilarious at the same time, and Mars Attacks! is just that. It’s also often completely overlooked and forgotten about.

As the title would suggest, the movie follows martians invading Earth. They are going to take over the entire world, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to stop them. That is until one teenager realizes that they can’t deal with loud soundwaves. Their heads literally explode, and suddenly, the humans may be able to fight back.

Mars Attacks! is only available to buy or rent via digital retailers.

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Finally, it’s all about a gothic horror-comedy. Sleepy Hollow is the tale of the Headless Horseman once again. This time, it brings witches, rolling heads, and Johnny Depp.

Depp is Ichabod Crane, a man who rides into town to figure out the mysterious case of the Headless Horseman. This Horseman is taking the heads of people in the town, and it seems like nobody is safe. It turns out that there is a connection through the murders, and Crane needs to find out who wants everyone dead before it’s too late. Could it be the woman he is starting to fall for? There’s a great mixture of romance, fantasy, horror, and comedy thrown in to Sleepy Hollow.

Sleepy Hollow is on Prime Video.
