Described as "a new kind of love story," the upcoming science fiction thriller movie Companion looks like it's going to be quite captivating, especially as it features a great cast of stars like Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets), Lukas Gage (Smile 2), and Jack Quaid (The Boys).

January is shaping up to be a fun month for horror fans, with Companion and Stephen Soderbergh's chilling film Presence releasing just one week apart. But while Presence looks like a more straightforward ghost story (albeit one told from the perspective of the spirit), Companion takes a slightly more unique angle with a twisted romance at its center.

No real plot details have been shared yet, but based on the teaser, it looks like Quaid and Gage's characters work together to kidnap women and set up these weird dates. Gage is shown punching out a cop and then dressed as one, suggesting he's working on this scheme with Quaid's psychopathic character. Then there's Thatcher playing a woman who initially appears to be on a date with Quaid before the camera shifts to show her handcuffed to her chair.

Companion is also being produced by Zach Cregger, the writer and director of Barbarian, meaning there will probably be all kinds of twists and turns that we can't even try to forecast based on one short teaser.

According to a previous article from The Hollywood Reporter, Companion was initially going to be Cregger's follow-up project until he pivoted to the upcoming horror film Weapons. But he really liked the idea for Companion and thus became a producer, helping the project develop and eventually get greenlit.

He also backed Drew Hancock as the writer and director. Companion will mark Hancock's feature directorial debut. His previous writing credits include shows like Surburgatory, Faking It, and Blue Mountain State.

In addition to the teaser, there's also a new poster that you can check out below.

Companion is being released theatrically on January 10, 2025.
