It’s What’s Inside ending explained: Breaking down that really confusing ending

Alright, I'm calling it. It's What's Inside is one of the best horror-comedies of this year! We got the chance to watch this trippy movie in advance, and boy were we entertained, and might I say thoroughly confused throughout.

But that's what this film was going for. It's not a straightforward horror movie. It wants you to use your brain muscles, and once it hits the credits, you're left mindblown by what you just watched. You might even find yourself rewinding back to certain scenes to make sense of everything. There were just so many mind-bending twists and turns that it was hard not to get sucked in. And then there were the dizzying body swaps that were going on. It was definitely hard to keep up, but we managed!

It's What's Inside centers around a group of old college friends who decide to reunite at a luxurious mansion for a pre-wedding party for one of their own. But what starts as a fun catching up of friends turns nightmarish when an estranged friend arrives at the party with a mysterious suitcase containing a body-swapping machine.

Who body swaps with who in each round in It's What's Inside?

Before we get into how this movie ends, let's first discuss the three rounds of body swapping that the friend group decides to participate in at the party. As everyone catches up with each other, the man of the hour, Reuben, reveals that he invited Forbes, an estranged friend who had been on the outs with the rest of the group ever since he got expelled from college his freshman year. According to Brooke and Maya, Forbes had been working for a tech company in California all these years.

Once Forbes arrives at the mansion, he shares with everyone a mysterious suitcase he brought along with him. Everyone in the house wants to play a party game, and what Forbes has with him is about to be their form of entertainment for the night. He explains that what's inside the suitcase is something that he and his tech company have been working on for five years. Instead of going into further details, he pops open the suitcase and shows everyone exactly what he's talking about.

Inside the suitcase is a mysterious machine containing many buttons, wires, and switches. Forbes hands out a pair of electrodes to every person participating and tells them to place them on their temples. Without explaining any rules, he flips a switch, and instantly, everyone in the room swaps bodies. After 20 seconds, Forbes flips another switch, and everyone returns to their original bodies. Now everyone is freaking out about what just happened.

Then, Forbes tells them about a game they can all play with the machine: Mafia. He explains how the game works, which is that they all swap bodies and then have to guess who is in whose body. But first, everyone has to get a Polaroid of themselves taken. While playing the game, anyone can guess who is in whose body at any point. If someone correctly guesses who someone is, that person's photo is pinned to their body and they lose the round. But if someone incorrectly guesses who someone is, they must reveal who they are and they're out of the round.

Maya asks Forbes how they would know if someone is lying about who they are, and Forbes basically says that he'll know because he's the person over the game, and he can't make any guesses. After all the questions about the game are out of the way, Forbes flips a switch on the body-swapping machine, and the first round begins.

Round 1

• Shelby is in Brooke's body.
• Nikki is in Maya's body.
• Brooke is in Shelby's body.
• Maya is in Nikki's body.
• Cyrus is in Reuben's body.
• Forbes is in Dennis's body.
• Reuben is in Cyrus's body.
• Dennis is in Forbes's body.

In the first round, there's some lying going on. While everyone is led to believe that Cyrus is in Dennis's body, it turns out he isn't. Cyrus is in Reuben's body, and Forbes is in Dennis's body. Forbes lied and said he was Cyrus when he actually wasn't. While in Reuben's body, Cyrus confronts Forbes (in Dennis's body) about him lying. Forbes basically tells him it's not a big deal and that he was really helping him out because now he can experience "new opportunities" while being in Reuben's body. And boy, does Cyrus experience a new opportunity!

While exploring the house, he runs into Maya, who is in Nikki's body. Back in college, Cyrus used to have the biggest crush on Nikki, and it appears that he still likes her even though he's with Shelby. While Cyrus knows that Maya is in Nikki's body, Maya doesn't know that Cyrus is in Reuben's body. She thinks it's Forbes, so she comes on to him. But before they start making out, she reveals to Cyrus that she and Reuben used to be together a long time ago. That's why she has no problem making out with his body even though it's not him. Their make-out session comes to an end when Cyrus accidentally cuts himself on some sharp glass.

Later, Cyrus sees Shelby (in Brooke's body) badmouthing him to Reuben (in Cyrus's body). He immediately wants to switch back and not play the game anymore. The first round is over, and Cyrus wants to sit out the next round. However, Shelby manages to convince him to keep playing. In the second round, Shelby and Cyrus decide they will cheat by signaling to each other so that they'll know whose body they're in.

Round 2

• Shelby is in Nikki's body.
• Nikki is in Brooke's body.
• Brooke is in Maya's body.
• Maya is in Shelby's body.
• Cyrus is in Forbes's body.
• Forbes is in Reuben's body.
• Reuben is in Dennis's body.
• Dennis is in Cyrus's body.

In this round, Reuben (in Dennis's body) uses the opportunity to do what he wants which is to sleep with Maya. Remember, they used to be a thing back in the day. However, Maya isn't in her body. She's in Shelby's body, and Reuben knows this. Brooke is in Maya's body, but Reuben is so desperate to be with Maya in some way that he doesn't mind sleeping with her body even though she isn't in it. He takes Brooke (in Maya's body) to the roof of the mansion, and they hook up. Brooke doesn't mind sleeping with Reuben either because she always liked him.

Meanwhile, Shelby (in Nikki's body) and Cyrus (in Forbes's body) are hooking up in the greenhouse. But they stop since Cyrus starts to become uncomfortable. They return to the mansion where the others are, and just as Cyrus is about to reveal to everyone that Shelby is in Nikki's body, someone/something is seen falling from the roof. Everyone makes their way outside and sees Dennis and Maya's dead bodies on the ground. This means Reuben and Brooke are dead, and Maya and Dennis are stuck in other people's bodies. Dun dun duuun!

Nikki (in Brooke's body) wants to call the cops, but Forbes (in Reuben's body) refuses to let her, claiming he doesn't want the authorities to confiscate his body-swapping machine. Cyrus (in Forbes's body) tells everyone that they should just go back inside the mansion and swap bodies back, but Dennis (in Cyrus's body) refuses to do so. He then starts unveiling secrets about their college days. Back in college, Dennis and Nikki were together, but he cheated on her with Forbes's younger sister, Beatrice, and Cyrus told Nikki about it. He told Nikki because he liked her and thought he'd have a chance with her, but she turned him down.

Heartbroken over the rejection, Cyrus got together with Shelby even though he didn't really want to be with her. As Shelby (in Nikki's body) listens to the story, she becomes more and more sad. Dennis and Cyrus continue to argue, and then Dennis calls the cops and tells them that Cyrus pushed Maya and Dennis off the roof. Suddenly, Nikki (in Brooke's body) appears out of nowhere and asks where Forbes is. Forbes (in Reuben's body) tries to run away, but Nikki catches up to him and knocks him out.

Everyone goes back inside the mansion and prepares to swap bodies back, but Shelby (in Nikki's body) refuses to do so. She wants to stay in Nikki's body, and since she's the only other person besides Forbes who knows how to work the body-swapping machine, they need her help. She storms off, and Cyrus (in Forbes's body) runs after her. He tries to convince her to swap bodies back, and just when it seems like he's successfully persuaded her, Maya (in Shelby's body) messes things up for him by revealing that they hooked up.

Shelby goes to talk to Forbes, who is tied up in a room somewhere in the mansion, and he convinces her to get her revenge on Cyrus and Nikki. Now, here's where the third and final round starts.

How does It's What's Inside end?

Round 3

• Shelby is in her own body.
• Nikki is in Reuben's body.
• Maya is in Brooke's body.
• Cyrus is in his own body.
• Beatrice is in Nikki's body.
• Dennis is in Forbes's body.

Wait, when did Beatrice get in the mix? Well, that's the biggest twist of them all. We find out at the very end of the film that Beatrice was in Forbes's body when he arrived at the party with the suitcase. How? Well, it all started back in college. Dennis lied and told everyone he wasn't hooking up with Beatrice to get back on Nikki's good side. He even called her delusional. Beatrice was known for having "episodes" where she would spazz out, and on the night of Reuben's birthday party, she had her worst episode yet. She was then thrown into a mental hospital.

One day, Forbes visits Beatrice at the mental hospital and shows her his body-swapping machine. He shows her how it works, and they swap bodies. But instead of swapping back, Beatrice, now in Forbes's body, knocks Forbes out and runs away with his machine. She did this because she wanted to get revenge on her brother and his friend group. We find out all this information when the real Forbes (in Beatrice's body) shows up at the mansion after the third round and bumps into Dennis (in Forbes's body). He tells Dennis everything that happened.

Dennis then shares with Forbes what happened to everyone after the final body swap. According to Dennis, he was supposed to go into Reuben's body, but Beatrice purposely messed up who was supposed to switch with who to benefit herself and Shelby. Yes, Beatrice teamed up with Shelby even though Shelby didn't know her true identity.

Dennis was swapped into Forbes's body while Nikki got swapped into Reuben's. Maya got put into Brooke's body, and Shelby and Cyrus got put back into their own bodies. What about Beatrice, you ask? Well, she swapped into Nikki's body and ran off with the body-swapping machine. She also transferred all the money in Dennis's trust fund account to an offshore account. So, now the money is hers and she got her revenge. Lastly, Cyrus is in prison for the murders of Maya and Dennis, and Shelby breaks things off with him for good.
