It's been a hell of a year for disturbing birth scenes in the horror genre, which is not surprising, given the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade, and 2024 isn't done with us just yet. Perhaps one of the most famous stories of horror movie pregnancies is getting a prequel this September on Paramount+, and the streamer has just released the official trailer!

Apartment 7A is set in 1965, a little before Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse move into the Bramford in the original 1968 classic Rosemary's Baby. Though it does feature familiar characters, like the creepy culty Castevets, Minnie and Roman—this time played by Academy Award-winning actress Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally. The duo is joined by Golden Globe winner Julia Garner, who plays Terry Gionoffrio, a character killed off-screen in the original film.

Because before Rosemary, there was Terry, and as the trailer suggests, there was even a woman before Terry. The Castevets clearly spent many years trying to bring the spawn of Satan into the world.

Terry will eventually meet a tragic end, as foretold by the film, but Apartment 7A explores her story and provides a new angle to an iconic horror tale. I think it's smart that the filmmakers chose to tell a story set before the film, as many attempts have been made to pull off a good sequel. Even Ira Levin, who wrote the original novel the 1968 film was based on, attempted a follow-up book, but it wasn't nearly as well-received as the first.

As shown in the trailer embedded above, Terry is a talented dancer who suffers a potentially career-ending injury and becomes addicted to drugs as a result. With her dream job potentially over, Terry is grateful when a wealthy couple takes an interest in her and invites her to live in her own apartment in the Bramford building.

They offer to aid her recovery and even connect her with a Broadway producer (Jim Sturgess). But when Terry wakes up one night with no memory of the night before and additional disturbing things happening around the building, she realizes something very dark is happening within the Bramford.

Apartment 7A is directed by Natalie Erika James (Relic) from a script by James, Christian White, and Skylar James. Skylar James came up with the screen story. Supporting cast members include Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Wonka), Marli Siu (Everything I Know About Love), Rosy McEwen (Blue Jean), and Andrew Buchan (All the Money in the World).

Paramount released a few new photos alongside the trailer that include new looks at characters like Terry, Minnie, and Roman.
