So, here's what you should see in the theaters in August: Cuckoo, Alien: Romulus, The Crow, and Trap. But out of all these horror movies, Trap will likely be on the first ones you see, because Warner Bros. changed the date. Instead of releasing on August 9, the new M. Night Shyamalan film will now be released on August 2.

Warner Bros. decision to move Trap up is somewhat perplexing as the film will now be in direct competition with Neon's horror film Cuckoo, whereas before it would have been up against It Ends with Us and Borderlands, neither of which is another horror movie.

Trap comes from Academy Award-nominated film director M. Night Shyamalan. He's best known for writing and directing the box office hit The Sixth Sense. In fact, this movie got him nominated for two Academy Awards. He was also behind the films Split, Glass, Old and Knock at the Cabin.

Trap is his latest movie, which is being described as a psychological mystery thriller. He wrote, directed, and produced the film. Marc Bienstock and Ashwin Rajan signed on to produce the film as well with Shyamalan's Blinding Edge Pictures as the production studio behind it.

We first learned about this movie back in October 2022 when Universal Pictures announced that it had set a new thriller by Shyamalan for an April 2024 release. We would later find out in February 2023 that the movie was Trap and that it would no longer be released through Universal Pictures but instead through Warner Bros. Pictures. This was because of a multi-year first-look deal Shyamalan entered with Warner Bros.

Filming took place from October 16 to Dec. 8, 2023, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Oppenheimer's Josh Harnett and Wolf Like Me actress Ariel Donoghue were announced to be starring in the leading roles. Harnett plays a seemingly loving father living a double life as a serial killer, and Donoghue plays his teen daughter. Joining them in the cast are Saleka Shyamalan, Hayley Mills, Alison Pill, Marnie McPhail, and Vanessa Smythe.

The film centers around a father and daughter, who while attending a pop concert, realize that they're "at the center of a dark and sinister event." A serial killer called "The Butcher" is believed to be at the concert, prompting the police to surround the venue in an effort to catch them. But the twist is that the serial killer is actually the father... At least that's what the trailer makes it seem like.

Shyamalan is known for leaving his movies with twist endings, so we're expecting to be blown away by Trap's ending. Who knows, maybe the daughter is really the serial killer and the father is protecting her. The only way to find out is by watching Trap when it comes to theaters.

Trap theatrical release date

Luckily, we don't have to wait until the end of August to see the horror thriller. It's slated to be released in theaters on Friday, Aug. 9, 2024. Tickets aren't available to purchase at the moment, but you can expect them to be available as we get closer to the movie's release. As of May 2024, it's unknown if Trap will eventually stream somewhere, but if it does, it'll most likely stream on Max since it's a Warner Bros. Discovery production. A digital release is also expected at a later date, but nothing has been confirmed. We'll get back to you with these deets once they're known.
