It has been more than a month since the identity of "Pit Girl" was revealed along with the many other jaw-dropping moments from the Yellowjackets season 3 finale, but we finally have an update on the future of the popular horror series! 1428 Elm has learned that Paramount+ with Showtime have renewed the show for a fourth season, keeping the show on track to hit its original five-season plan. Spoilers ahead for season 3.
Back in 2023, co-creator Ashley Lyle told Entertainment Weekly that she and collaborator Bart Nickerson had pitched the show for five seasons, with Lyle even saying they "don't really see this as being more than a five-season show."
With season 4 officially happening, it's looking more and more likely that the creators will get to see their visions fulfilled, though as each season becomes increasingly polarizing among fans and critics, it's hard to say if the series is adhering to their original vision. I think most of us are hoping that the writers have a strong end game in mind that will answer our most pressing unresolved questions.
The third season of Yellowjackets might be the most divisive of the three thus far, lending to seemingly endless discourse online about everything from Hilary Swank's surprise turn as the fandom-nicknamed "Melissa the Hat" to Shauna's dramatic villainous turn. This season also featured a couple of genuinely shocking deaths as we lost beloved characters like young Mari and adults Van and Lottie.
Despite the month-long wait, this renewal news doesn't come as a big surprise because season 3 of the series set a record as the most watched and most engaged with on social media platforms.
In addition to its buzzy social presence, Paramount+ with Showtime reveals that the third season "marks the most-watched season ever," with the season 3 finale becoming the "most-streamed Yellowjackets episode in series history."
"Yellowjackets has become a cultural juggernaut; with season three shattering all previous records, we are thrilled to announce its renewal for a season four on Paramount+. Ashley and Bart have masterfully crafted an utterly singular, genre-defying phenomenon: a perfect alchemy of psychological horror, survival thriller and coming-of-age drama that continues to captivate audiences worldwide, brought to life by our extraordinarily talented and beloved cast," said Chris McCarthy, Co-CEO of Paramount Global and President of SHOWTIME/MTV Entertainment Studios.
So, where does the show go from here? Well, Shauna has basically become persona non grata in both the teen and adult storylines. By the end of season 3, adult Tai and Misty have forged an alliance of sorts to confront Shauna, setting up for significant conflict in the season ahead.
Back in the teen timeline, it seems like the show is prepping the rescue storyline. I think we'll finally get to see what happened when the girls were rescued from the woods and maybe we'll even start to see flashbacks to the immediate aftermath of their return to the real world.
