James Wan reveals his new film to be Malignant as production begins
James Wan announced the name of his new horror film yesterday on Instagram. Principal photography has begun on Malignant.
James Wan, after keeping his fans in the dark while he prepped his latest project, revealed some details yesterday via his Instagram account. His next feature that will take him back to his horror roots is called Malignant.
We also know that principal photography has begun on his 10th feature. There has been much speculation about what the title is referencing. Last month, we even jumped into the pool with our take on his photos from his location scouting expedition.
What do we know about his latest venture? Well, it will be a hard R thriller that is an original idea with practical effects. Some have theorized that it could even be a Giallo picture based on information that was provided in a Deadline article on films receiving California Tax Credits. The company listed for Wan’s then untitled production was Giallo, LLC.
Giallo is a well-known Italian horror subgenre that can be described as an amalgam of crime solving psychological thrillers with a dash of horror and erotic encounters. It is considered to be the precursor of the American slasher film.
However, what could Malignant possibly be referring to? While the easy explanation would be the diagnosis that is applied to a cancerous tumor, let’s take a look at the IG image.
"First day of principal photography on the 10th feature film of my career. MALIGNANT is the official title. Really excited for this one.23k Likes, 470 Comments – James Wan (@creepypuppet) on Instagram: “First day of principal photography on the 10th feature film of my career. MALIGNANT is the official…”"
There appears to be a rapier sword slicing through the title of the movie which almost puts one in the mind of a period piece. In and of itself that is interesting because if you look at the centuries old definition of the word, you find in Latin it means, “contriving maliciously,” or “likely to rebel against God or authority.”
It could stand to reason that supernatural elements can exist in the Italian horror subgenre but it is a rare occurrence. Malignant could also describe a powerful evil. The possibilities are endless.
James Wan’s Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, Jake Abel, Jacqueline McKenzie, Michole Briana White, George Young and Paul Mabon. We can expect to see this production hitting theaters sometime in 2020. Stay tuned…
