Jason Blum says they're "working on the script" for the Dead by Daylight movie
New York Comic Con 2024 is officially over, and we're still reeling over all the news that was released during the popular convention. One piece of news that really stuck out to us was Jason Blum sharing an update on the upcoming Dead by Daylight movie. He gave a little update on where he and the movie's creative team are when it comes to the filmmaking process, and we'd say it's a pretty hopeful update.
Word of a Dead by Daylight movie first emerged back in March 2023. At the time, it was announced that James Wan's Atomic Monster and Jason Blum's Blumhouse would be collaborating with Behaviour Interactive to create a feature film adaptation of the popular horror multiplayer video game of the same name. It was also revealed at the time that a search had begun for a director and screenwriter for the movie.
Wan, Blum, and Stephen Mulrooney were revealed to be producers on the film, with Remi Racine, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Ryan Turek, and Russell Binder as executive producers. However, it was pretty much radio silence after the movie's announcement.
Now, we've finally learned some new information about this video game-to-film adaptation, and we're so happy to share with you what we learned. At New York Comic Con 2024, Comicbook got the opportunity to speak with film producer Jason Blum, who shared that the Dead by Daylight movie is still in the works.
He told the news site that he and the rest of the movie's creative team are currently working on the script.
"You know, we don’t put movies in the calendar until we have the right script. I hope we get a script that we love. We’re working on a script, but it could be five years, it could be 12 months. You just don’t know. You can’t make the movie until the script is right, and you don’t know how long that’ll take."

He then compared the Dead by Daylight movie's filmmaking process to the filmmaking process of a recent Blumhouse movie, Five Nights at Freddy's. A significant amount of time had passed between the announcement of the Five Nights at Freddy's film adaptation and its actual release in theaters.
Blum told Comicbook that he believes the Five Nights at Freddy's movie was successful because of how much time he and the crew took to make it. He believes that since he and the rest of the creative team spent a good amount of time making Five Nights at Freddy's, perfecting it until it was a high-quality horror film, it became a hit at the box office.
"It took 10 years to make Five Nights at Freddy’s, and I think one of the reasons the movie worked is because we spent 10 years trying to get it right."
- Jason Blum
Blum could very well be right. Although we really want to see the Dead by Daylight movie, we would rather it spend a lot of time being perfected than receive it too early and it's a bad or mediocre movie.
The Dead by Daylight video game pits four players, known as Survivors, against one player who takes on the role of a Killer. While the Killer's goal is to hunt down the Survivors, the Survivors must work together and avoid being caught while repairing generators to power the exit gates for their escape.
No cast, director, or screenwriter has been attached to this film adaptation just yet. Stay tuned to 1428 Elm for more news and coverage on the Dead by Daylight movie!
