The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman Spoils Major Character Death?
By Jeremy Dick
Has The Walking Dead franchise creator and TV series executive producer Robert Kirkman spoiled a big death on an upcoming episode of the popular AMC show? You’d certainly think so after taking a gander at the recent horror headlines, where several outlets have reported as much based on a fleeting comment Kirkman made during his appearance on Comedy Central this past Wednesday night.

@Midnight is a game show of sorts featuring three contestants competing to be the funniest participant of the night as they buzz in and crack jokes on various viral memes and videos. The show is carried by Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick and usually features three stand-up comedians. However, this special episode presented only people involved with The Walking Dead; Lauren Cohan and Josh McDermitt, who play Maggie Greene and Eugene Porter on the show, joined creator Robert Kirkman for the game.
The “spoiler” in question was blurted out by Kirkman during a segment called “Walking Dead Spoilers.” The contestants were tasked with coming up with fake spoilers for the TV show, which included quips about Carl being revealed to have been wearing a wire the whole time and the group finding a fully-functional Chili’s. Kirkman then dished out a piece of information in jest to rile up the audience.
While it wasn’t a serious indication of something that will happen on the TV series, it is, however, a very real MAJOR COMIC SPOILER, so if you’re not caught up on the comics or are planning to read them later, you might want to click away now! If you’re not concerned about having one of the biggest moments from the comic series completely spoiled, here is the joke:
"“Eventually a character named Negan is introduced. He’s going to bash in Glenn’s brains with a baseball bat called Lucille.”"
Okay, so it’s not so much a “joke” as it is something that really happened in graphic detail in issue #100 of the comic series. Because of this, a lot of people are jumping the gun and concluding that Robert Kirkman just spoiled a major upcoming moment in the TV series. I want those people to know that this is simply not the case!
Robert Kirkman wasn’t spoiling anything other than issue #100 of the comic book series. After the Facebook debacle a couple months back when the AMC Facebook page spoiled Beth’s death before the show had even aired on the West Coast, I’m sure the powers that be are trying extra hard to keep their shocking deaths under wraps. And while Glenn certainly met his demise thanks to Lucille in the comics, Kirkman jokingly suggesting that the exact same thing will happen on the show only means that this won’t happen on the show. While Robert Kirkman may have been joking about spoilers, the truth is that AMC doesn’t want any getting out, so Kirkman’s joke about Glenn dying this way all but confirms that this won’t happen to Glenn on the TV series.
There have been dozens of changes from the source material when it comes to The Walking Dead and any fan who has enjoyed both mediums could tell you that. Negan will most likely show up at some point, unfortunately for Rick and his crew, but if he’s going to be introducing Lucille right away to one of Rick’s buddies, it’s not going to be Glenn. That’s not to say that Glenn is safe (obviously, nobody is) but I’d say it’s extremely unlikely that he is going to receive the skull-bashing he got in the comics. If the scene is going to be imported, another unlucky fellow will be taking Glenn’s spot, similar to how Hershel has taken Tyreese’s comic death.
New episodes of The Walking Dead continue on AMC every Sunday night at 9/8c.
