Overkill’s The Walking Dead is DOA for consoles and steam
By Devin Shea
After news of “Overkill’s The Walking Dead” being cancelled on consoles, it looks like its days on Steam are numbered, too.
Overkill’s The Walking Dead was one of the games I was super excited to play. From the cinematic trailers, the gameplay trailers and the stills of the game, it looked pretty amazing and the first “season” released in November 2018 to moderate reviews on Steam.
But in the last couple of days, there has been news from the world of the Walking Dead. It would seem that Overkill’s The Walking Dead is dead on arrival for all consoles and it seems its days are numbered on Steam.

According to Variety, it was Skybound that pulled the plug. Earlier this week it was announced that Skybound (the company founded by Robert Kirkman and David Alpert that is handling the final season of The Walking Dead game after the Telltale incident) had terminated the contract with the game’s publisher Starbreeze, citing quality issues. Skybound had this to say to Variety regarding the break:
"“Our creators and their stories are the core of Skybound, and since 2014 we have worked hard to expand the world of ‘The Walking Dead’ into an exceptional co-op action FPS. We did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game, but ultimately ‘Overkill’s The Walking Dead’ did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised.”"
At first, Overkill’s The Walking Dead was just being cancelled for consoles, but today it was announced that the game could be removed from Steam in the near future. What does that mean for people on Steam who purchased the game? Skybound is working to come up with a solution to still bring season 2 to gamers that had purchased the game.
More from The Walking Dead
- First 7 seasons of Fear the Walking Dead will stream on AMC+!
- AMC releases premiere date, new images for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
- Joe Bob and The Last Drive-In present first episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City
- New trailer released for The Walking Dead: Dead City
- AMC: Big announcements made at WonderCon for The Walking Dead spinoffs
But, if Starbreeze and Skybound can’t come up with a solution to the issue, then the game will be removed from Steam and that’s that. I can only hope to assume that Steam will refund players at that point but nothing is for certain yet except that consoles are out of luck in terms of season 2 of Overkill’s The Walking Dead.
Overkill’s The Walking Dead is a first-person shooter set in The Walking Dead universe. It follows the stories of four different characters and the game emphasizes cooperative gameplay. It was a game that released many awesome looking trailers pre release but had a very uneventful and quiet release back in late 2018.
It would seem that Walking Dead games have had a string of back luck lately and it was a good break that The Walking Dead game started by Telltale was getting completed by Skybound. Keep an eye on 1428 Elm for news on Overkill’s The Walking Dead and it’s fate on Steam.
