Saw XI and The Monkey among the 24 scary movies we cannot wait to see in 2025
By Mads Lennon
Now that 2024 is more than halfway over, it's time to look ahead to 2025 and the many horror movies headed our way. Next year is shaping up to be a great one for franchise favorites with new entires in iconic series like Scream, Insidious, The Conjuring, Saw, and more. Here are some of the films we're most anticipating in 2025.
28 Years Later (Jun. 20)
Nearly two decades after the last film in the series, 28 Years Later sees the return of the original creators Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. Cillian Murphy will also reportedly be back for this one, so it's shaping up to be an exciting project.
The Black Phone sequel (Oct. 17)
Ethan Hawke is back as The Grabber in this follow-up to the 2021 film that was based on Joe Hill's short story of the same name. Little is known about the sequel apart from the fact the first film's cast will reprise their roles.
The Bride! (Sept. 26)
Maggie Gyllenhaal directs this sci-fi horror film that is inspired by the 1935 movie Bride of Frankenstein. The movie boasts an excellent cast, featuring Penélope Cruz, Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, and Annette Bening.
Saw XI (Sept. 26)
Originally scheduled for a late 2024 release, the eleventh film in the Saw franchise has been pushed back to 2025 and it has some pretty big shoes to fill after the rousing success of Saw X, which was the first in the film series to get critical acclaim. Producers have indicated that Saw XI will be a direct sequel to Saw X, which is a smart move as it brought back fan favorites Tobin Bell as John Kramer and Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young.
M3GAN 2.0 (Jun. 27)
The break-dancing killer AI doll M3GAN is coming back for a sequel. Not surprising given the success of the first movie in the film. A spinoff movie titled SOULM8TE is also in development and scheduled for 2026.
Five Nights At Freddy's sequel (Dec. 5)
While it did receive some mixed reviews from critics and fans, especially those disappointed that the film leaned more into its kid-friendly/horror-beginner status, Five Nights at Freddy's was still a massive success.
The franchise as a whole has earned millions, with new games, merch, and more coming out regularly. Jim Henson's Creature Shop is already hard at work on the sequel and early photos show sneak peeks at what's to come in the sequel, which looks like it will feature some of the Toy versions of the popular animatronics.
The Monkey (Feb. 21)
Hot off of one of 2024's most successful horror movies, Longlegs director Oz Perkins will next helm this adaptation of the Stephen King short story for Neon. The film stars Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, and Elijah Wood.
Insidious 6 (Aug. 29)
Despite previous reports indicating that Blumhouse would take a break from the Insidious franchise for a bit, that no longer appears to be the case. Insidious: The Red Door was advertised as the last in the series, but then it broke box office records for the franchise.
I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel (Jul. 18)
A legacy sequel/reboot from Do Revenge director Jenn Kaytin Robertson, I Know What You Did Last Summer is shaping up to be an exciting new chapter in the '90s teen slasher series. It won't retcon the sequel, and stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to return. Let's hope they get Brandy on the phone, soon, too!
The Conjuring 4: Last Rites (Sept. 5)
Another James Wan-produced franchise. The Conjuring will reportedly come to an end in 2025, though I find that hard to believe. At least this fourth chapter is supposedly the last of the "main" movies that started with the 2013 movie. It could be the last time we see Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Scream 7 (TBA)
A film that should have been a triumphant and fun ending to the Carpenters sisters arc has instead been plagued by bad publicity due to Spyglass's decision to fire star Melissa Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in the previous two films.
Jenna Ortega also announced she wouldn't be back for Scream 7. Instead, it will pivot back to Sidney's story with Neve Campbell returning along with Gale Weathers actress Courteney Cox. While many are excited to see Sidney again, some of us were really invested in the franchise's fresh new direction led by Barrera and disappointed she's no longer involved.
